After a challenging battle with dementia, Susan P. Bowman “Susie” passed away the evening of April 15, 2024, at the age of 77, with daughters and sister by her side.
Susie was born in Daytona Beach Florida, but spent most of her early years in Galax, Virginia where she lived until 1968 when she moved to Hampton to begin teaching. There she met her husband Mac “the love of her life” and were married in 1969. They spent their life together in Hampton, VA raising their family.
Susie was full of humor, laughing louder than the rest of the crowd, always welcoming friends into their home, and giving endless hugs. Affectionately known as Aunt Susie to her children’s friends, or “Shooshie” by some of her closest friends and family, she spent much of her time reading, watching movies, or figuring out her next great hobby.
As a Nana, Susie felt she was at her best, taking endless photos of her grandchildren and precious grand-dogs, Copper, Maggie, and Minnie.
Survivors include her daughters Karen Witherspoon (Shawn) and Linda James (Chip); her granddaughter, Piper Witherspoon, her grandsons Wyatt Ray “Trip” Bowman III, Connor, Camden and Cooper James, her sister, Linda King, brother Steve Peck, and stepmother, Margaret Peck.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Wyatt Ray “Mac” Bowman, son, Wyatt Ray Bowman II, her Ray of sunshine, and her parents, Dr. Joseph C. Peck and Mary B. Peck. We love you to the moon and back!
A memorial service will take place at Worrell Memorial Baptist Church in Laurel Fork, VA on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 1:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Party will take place June 8, 2024, in Newport News, VA.

Tom and I were so sorry to hear of Susie’s passing! She had such a commanding presence, when Susie was in the room you knew it! Such a kind heart and good soul too! We have so many memories from our Fox Grove days while living next door to Mac and Susie! Wishing peace and comfort to all the family!
