Jerry Porter Haney, aged 82, of Creston, NC passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 27, 2024.
Jerry was born on April 7, 1941, the third son of Marcus Dean (MD) Haney and Margaret Porter. He grew up with brothers Marcus and Don on Colony Road in Charlotte, NC. A graduate of Myers Park High School and attendee of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad before becoming a tobacco product salesman and eventually the proprietor of the Humidor tobacco shop in the Overstreet Mall in uptown Charlotte, NC.
Jerry was interested in Genealogy and spent many weekends traveling to surrounding area courthouses studying microfiche. He was able to trace ancestors as far back as the 1600s. He was also involved in local politics in his community.
Outgoing and sociable he cherished his time with friends and family. Some of his fondest memories were of visiting family in the mountains at Cedar Creek and later hosting family and friends at their lake house in Denver, NC.
His wife of 28 years, Judy, died in 2022. Jerry is survived by his three children, daughters Jill Whittington and Candace Kelly (and husband Bill), and his son Michael (and wife Taressa); two step-sons, Brad (and wife Sherry) and Lee (and wife Becca) Champion; 5 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; and his brother Marcus (and wife Christie); and 2 nieces and 5 nephews, and their families.
A Celebration of his Life will be held March 9, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC where he will be buried alongside his parents and wife.
