Martha Elizabeth Hines Bass, 84, a lifelong resident of Belmont, North Carolina was welcomed into God’s embrace and everlasting peace on October 06, 2024 after a lengthy battle with Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on April 06, 1940 in Belmont, North Carolina to William James and Mary Frances Hines.
Martha was a friendly, beautiful, intelligent, caring lady whose life was centered around caring for her children, grandchildren, and beloved fur babies through the years: Dutchess, Sparki, Angel, Liz, Marti, Melody and Sara.
A graduate of Sacred Heart School in Lemont, she married Earl Franklin (Buddy) Bass on September 25, 1959. She went on to work as a secretary at Allstate Insurance Company in Charlotte prior to becoming a mother- her most cherished job. She was retail cashier and store worker for several years, and then began working as a secretary at Radiator Specialty Company until she retired.
Martha loved music and enjoyed a wide variety of musical genres. Her favorite performer was Tom Jones, who to her delight, she saw in concert a few times. She sang in the choir at East Belmont Baptist Church early in her marriage. Martha was highly creative and enjoyed using her imagination and ingenuity. She was skilled at sewing, made many clothes, doll clothes, and home items. She also loved to crochet and proudly created baby blankets for her two precious grandsons. A talented artist, she enjoyed ceramics, painting, and drawing. She was an avid reader and enjoyed many Danielle Steele novels. Martha also loved flowers and gardening, managing a large backyard garden for many years which supplied family and friends with fresh vegetables and fruit. During her children’s early school years, she volunteers for the PTA and contributed to school and Girl Scout projects and field trips.
Friends and family remember Martha for her warmth and friendliness, fiercely protective and loving dedication to her family, and proper, yet relaxed manners. She always had a smile and a laugh for you. Martha was known for her beauty, both inside and out. Over the years many would comment with amazement at her unceasing ability to match all her accessories with her clothing from her earrings down to her shoes! Martha loved jewelry of all kinds and could have been the human definition of “Bling”!
Martha is survived by her children Debbie (Mack) Santiago-Jones, Andy (Christina) Bass, Tammy (Bud) Haynes, and her two grandsons Ken Bass and Marc Santiago; sister Mary (Jim) Stancil, brother David (Daryle) Hines, and brother Joe (Wanda) Hines; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand nephews, and lifelong best friend Mildred (W.T.) Phillips
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Frances Hines, infant brother William James Hines Jr. and grandparents, Felix and Mary McKnight.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:00am at The Good Samaritan Funeral Home. Officiating is Rev. Dr. Randy Setzer of Macedonia Baptist Church Lincolnton, NC. The family will receive at 10:00am prior to the service.
